How To Overcome Screen Addiction In Children

Addiction is defined as a dependency on a substance, thing, or activity. Kids are more susceptible to addiction especially when they are exposed to something at an early age and without proper rules. Parameters must be set. Without rules, kids become unruly, disrespectful, and often addicted to things that eventually harm them. It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure children are given a fair chance to learn how to control their desires.
Screen addiction is real. It is plaguing children around the world. In a recent PBS special, the concept was explored using Chinese children. In China, there are addiction centers that focus on treating young children who are addicted to electronics. A 2013 policy statement made by the American Academy of Pediatrics also assessed children and found the statistics quite shocking. The average eight to ten-year-old is on an electronic device or on social media eight hours a day, and older children are on them eleven hours or more per day. Television is the biggest issue. However, computers, cellphones, and tablets are also being used.
The Academy doing the PBS special stated parents have few rules about media usage for their children. About two-thirds of questioned parents said they do not have rules for how long their child is using media like tablets and television. Furthermore, the issue starts when they are toddlers.
It has become a thing to hand over a cellphone or tablet to keep the baby entertained when the child should be looking around, seeing the world, and taking it in. It is suggested that no child before the age of two should be given electronic media. The child’s brain is developing very rapidly between birth and two years of age, and it can definitely lead to addiction problems in their youth. It is also the time when children are learning by interacting.
Teenagers should be limited to entertainment concepts by reducing the time spent on electronics or in front of the TV to two hours at most per day. The Seattle Children?s Research Institute believes children who see violent video games, watch TV with violence become immune rather than empathetic, which leads to the children acting more violently.
The statistics and consequences are alarming. You have found this guide to screen addiction because you are worried about your child or children. You can combat addiction. As the parent, you must instill proper rules, to provide alternatives, and the best solution?don?t introduce electronics at an early age. Learn how you can combat the screen addiction you see or how to stop it before it starts.
