We are told, ad nauseum, that manipulation is a bad thing. Hearing this phrase can make you think negatively about such a useful tool. Yet, when asked, how many people are actually able to define the meaning of manipulation?
According to Psychology Today, manipulation is the exercise of undue influence through emotional exploitation and mental distortion with the intention to seize control or power over an individual.

This description places a negative connotation on manipulation, which could explain why so many people see it as something bad. Society is against those who try to trick others or force them to do things that they wouldn’t do under normal circumstances. This often arises because there are a lot of people who manipulate others with nefarious intentions. However, almost everyone has– at one time or another –manipulated someone else, and it is also likely that you have been manipulated at some point, without even noticing it.

A manipulator is capable of both reading body language and utilizing it strategically. A manipulator knows that it would take more than what they say to the target to lead themselves to success. They also need to be careful about what their body language is telling the target. They need to look nice and clean-cut. They know how to make eye contact to show they are interested in the other person without being too intense. They know how to use their hands to form gestures that showcase the important part of what they’re saying, and they know how to smile to put the other person at ease.

In short, there are a lot of things a manipulator needs to do in order to be successful. They must do all of this without the other person getting an idea of what’s happening. As soon as the other person figures it out, the whole ruse will fall apart, and it will be a lot harder to get the target to do what the manipulator wants. The manipulator is effective at persuading people because they know how to get a person to feel comfortable around them and react the way they want.
