Do you still suspect you?re not quite good enough and an imposter despite all your accomplishments? Avoidance of underlying common human feelings of never being quite good enough often creates an insecure, self-centered, defensive, prideful ego constantly seeking approval by trying to impress others, which interferes with relationships with ourselves and others. Mindful acceptance and self-compassion help diminish our prideful insecure ego leading to humility, realistic self-esteem, and more accepting and compassionate relations with ourselves and others. This workbook includes over 240 daily mindfulness, acceptance, self-compassion, and other exercises to foster awareness and acceptance of our positive and negative human qualities and defenses.
Rolf Carlson, Ph.D. received his BA in psychology from the University of Wisconsin and his clinical psychology doctorate from UNC-Chapel Hill. Before retirement, he worked with children and adults in a medical group in Minnesota for several decades. His own life experiences, listening to patients, conversations with lifelong friends, and the mindful acceptance literature led to the awareness that fears of unworthiness are a widespread human problem and often lead to a prideful defensive ego to deny and compensate for these fears of inadequacy. Mindful acceptance of our shared human imperfections, as well as our positive qualities, and self-compassion, help reduce our self-centered ego and lead to more realistic self-esteem and compassion for ourselves and others. He is grateful to his UNC advisor Grant Dahlstrom, Ph.D., his wife Kathy for her support, his lifelong friends (Rich, John, and Tom), his children and grandchildren, and the mindful acceptance literature, including Jon Kabat-Zinn, Tara Brach, Ph.D., Pema Chödrön, Kristin Neff, Ph.D., and Eckhart Tolle.
