This is a middle-grade historical novel featuring life on the Island of Formosa (now known as Taiwan) during the brief Spanish rule in the 17th Century.
Wawa is not an ordinary boy. Born a native on the Island of Formosa, he is separated from his parents and adopted by a Chinese Shaolin monk. At the age of 12, he is already well trained in Buddhism and kung fu skills. He aspires to become a learned monk so as to be able to help the unfortunate people. On a trip to visit another Shaolin master from whom he is to learn the unique Rock Monkey Kung Fu, Wawa meets his father Yotas by chance, without either one’s being aware of their kinship. He also encounters his adversary who is on the trail of Yotas. Yotas is wanted by the conquistadors for having revolted against them, and whoever captures the fugitive will get a handsome reward. The twists in the plot will keep you wondering about what will eventually happen to each of the interesting main characters. At the same time, you will get a glimpse of the multi-cultural history of the place, be entertained by amazing kung fu fighting actions, and hopefully also give some thought to racial prejudice and religious tolerance.
A Chinese edition of this novel is available as a separate book.It will be very helpful for intermediate-level English-Chinese bilingual students to read both editions side by side.
