When tragedy strikes, it can shatter our expectations of the world and our beliefs about a loving God. When our worldview is shaken to its core, our internal response can range from feelings of complete numbness to a jumble of uncontrolled anger, deep sadness, and bone-chilling fear.? ~Julie Clinton

Perhaps the most significant stumbling block in the life of new believers is the idea they will never suffer injustice. That suffering is reserved for the unjust, and as a child of God, they will be spared. Suffering doesn?t happen to punish the believer, or even to teach them. Problems are not evidence of wrongdoing or the inability to live perfect lives.Redemptive Suffering is not required of the believer. However, suffering happens, and believers have struggled for centuries in their attempt to explain why.
This book allows the reader to walk alongside a married couple from childhood through their final years and to experience what they experienced as they sought to understand the answer to this question.

Like most believers, Vicky and James follow a path not uncommon to most of their counterparts. While specific events may vary considerably, spiritual and emotional responses often remain quite similar. The chances are excellent that you will find yourself in some of the same situations, and like Vicky, you too will uncover the mystery of suffering in the life of the believer.

Excerpts:
When Vicky arrived at the hospital, James had been taken to ICU. For some reason, no one bothered to call her. Once again she began the all-too-familiar routine of attempting to calm him while the staff worked to relieve his symptoms. He fought everyone?s efforts for a long time, which was not unusual.
Finally, he appeared to go to sleep, and the nurse was able to place the breathing machine. Vicky would learn later he had been put on a morphine drip. The medical staff busied themselves with the usual routine, and she settled back to wait. They had been through this many times, and nothing seemed any different today.
Hours later a nurse entered the room and removed the breathing apparatus.
?What?s wrong?? asked Vicky.
?There?s nothing else we can do for him.? Her voice was cold and indifferent.
All of a sudden Vicky felt as if she was being sucked into a vacuum, he was going to die! She couldn?t have been more shocked. Over the years his declining health and the associated demands came to be a way of life for them. It was like waking up from a nightmare only to learn it was true.

The sky was gray, with no sign of life anywhere. The evidence of yesterday?s activity had mysteriously disappeared under a blanket of brilliant white. The broken toy gun left lying by the gate, a pile of small pieces of wood discarded from the last shop project, even the pathway?all vanished overnight. It seemed as though nature itself was attempting to erase the evidence of yesterday?s pain and disappointment. In such a moment, life is suspended in time.

The events recorded in this book, with the exception of the final chapter, are true. The journal entries are as originally written.Names and locations have been changed and dialogue added for smoother reading.
