With the value of Amazon free runs to authors dropping, and a number of people selling directly either through Woocommerce or something similar, we've been approached by authors asking about doing giveaways.

They would give us 1-3 copies of their book, we'd run the giveaway, they'd get promo from it and send the books to the winners. (One asked us if she sent it to us by email if we could forward it to the winner.)

@tirial had a look and we can set the technical side up to allow members to take part. It might get more newsletter readers to sign up for the full board, and its definitely something to keep the site going as the market changes. I'm provisionally in favour, but other views would be welcome.

I think it's a great idea! I wonder if it might be best to do as the one author suggested and have us forward it to the winner(s). I only say that because you could get the copies in advance and have some security that way. I don't know why an author wouldn't give up their books to the winners, but since it would be through Book Angel, I feel like making sure the goods will be delivered in a timely fashion is a good security blanket. I'm a paranoid person though.

I like the idea of doing giveaways, but I agree with @Jackie - when I was selling through eBay the number of times someone would ask me to auction something for them and I knew they would then fail to send it out...they never liked being told that unless I had the item in my possession and ready to send, there would be no auction. It's a good policy not to do any giveaways unless the books are in hand.

I'll just follow the others. I think giveaways are a great idea, but only if you have the goods. That way, you know the author is in good faith and the people entering are going to get their prize.

I agree with all of the above. I think giveaways are a really fun idea, and they're great for all parties involved! I wouldn't think that authors would have issues with sending you the goods first since you're basically giving them free publicity.

I certainly think it is worth trying a giveaway and seeing how it goes. Passing them out to members of the boards also gives a great reason for people to sign up, as well the great repartee from the current members.
