Pet peeves while reading

You're sitting at home reading a book. You've been enjoying this book for a while now and are on edge about finishing it. You're so close, but for some reason people can't seem to leave you alone. Someone is making too much noise. You just can't seem to get away from the things that bother you while reading!

This happens a lot. When the people around you do not read regularly and don't understand what it takes to finish a book, it's hard for them to accept you silently reading in the corner. Personally, this happens to me a lot with my boyfriend. He tends to talk my ear off once he sees me sitting down with a book.

What are some of your pet peeves while reading?
What bothers you when you have your nose in a book?

Losing track of time. It is a constant problem, because if I pick a book up I'm likely to finish it in one read, which can mean sneaking glances all day whenever there is a spare minute.

Hmmm... I do tend to "forget" character names. I mean other than the main characters, I generally tend not to care for other characters. And then if they suddenly show up a hundred pages later, I go crazy looking for the place where they'd been mentioned. This is the main reason why I am still reading the GoT series :D

Aside from remembering to charge my kindle and have it start whinging half way through a story. It's got to be people who want me to move. I'm forever being shifted just for having it out and concentrating on it.

Well, you need to find your "secret hideout". I mean I like a certain cafe that not a lot of people know about. I go there and read. And at home, I generally can find some time for reading as well.

  6. In our family we never interrupt a reader. I think it has always been an unspoken "law" to let a reader be. I'm so glad it's that way or I'd be ranting here.

I hate, Hate, HATE being disturbed while reading. And it is always when I'm out and about, never at home.

That must be heaven - the thought I could sit and read a book for hours without being interrupted.

Not found anywhere really that good to sit and read and that is a shame.

Yes, that's the rule in my family either. You don't interrupt and you don't try to read what the other person is reading. But, this is something that new family members don't always get. And this is also something that I don't expect anyone outside the family to understand either.

    Understand that one completely.

Especially the reading over the shoulder bit. There's nothing as bad as turning a page and hearing a little whine of disappointment if you go to fast.

Sometimes the book itself is irritating when I come to kilometric long paragraphs that I need to read again to fully understand. But for external interfere, it is our dogs that disturb my reading. I usually read an hour after lunch in time for a nap. When someone is passing by our street, our dogs would notice and they would start barking. But since I love our dogs, I cannot do anything about it.

Is that what got newspaper readers shuffling their pages and coughing loudly? It puts the person over their shoulder off, but it distracts me from whatever I'm reading. Now everyone is reading the news on their phones or kindles it is much quieter and easier to get into my book.

Yeah it does, although there was the one time I was so engrossed in a story I muttered, "I was reading that," when they turned the page over.

Reading over someone's shoulder...actually it's amazing the things you can read or see over people's shoulders from newspapers or tablets.

Yeah - it was a good story, although probably not that good as I cannot remember what it was about now. Football, I think.

For me it is losing track of time as well. I am pretty busy so I like to take some time to relax and read, but then the clock catches up to me.

When I read I like to put my earphones on as if I'm listening to music. This tends to discourage a lot of conversation. Even if someone tries to talk to me and I hear them, I just ignore them and they soon get the picture. It's a bit mean, I know, but it works.
