London Book Fair 2017

It's BookFair time of year again. Last year we came away with some interesting ideas, which we are only just putting into practice (to be fair there's been a lot going on last year. RIP the best bookclub cat ever.)

Is there anything you want to know about it, any ideas for things to discuss, or anyone else going along?

tirial might be going again for her own job, so if anyone wanted to arrange a meetup there to chat about bookangel and the behind-the-scenes IT stuff, this would be a good time to do it.

I can confirm I will be going, but for exact dates I'll need to book round hospital appointments so I can't be precise yet.

How much swag can you get out of all the stall holders and is it all book related?

Well, it is a book fair... While there are daily bags of items and newspapers at the entry that tell you about the days events etc. the main thing I want to come back with is business cards!

My major weakness is the discount book stalls. This year I won't be taking cash, but I might have to leave my credit card at home!

Discount book stalls? Are they turning it into a giant version of The Works?

I take it those stalls don't sell Kindle copies at the same time? Pretty please?

Sounds like it will be fun, so many stalls, so many previews and lots of people who like books to be books as in things you can hold instead of bits of data....

....Oh yeah. Any chance of some more feeds for the site.

Oh well - off to London Book Fair.

Not initially intended, going to see what all the fuss is about. Taking a day off work for the pleasure.

    Wish us luck.

Everything ready, after the morning from hell, and just posting five minutes before we leave...yes I am dragging CIAS along, and have warned him to watch his credit card around the bargain section!

    You're up this early?

I'll be awake later, have fun and bring us lots of goodies.

We have goodies or rather books to read and review.

Just finished pizza lunch after speaking to various stands.

    I'm quite enjoying it.

On way home - all booked out but some useful leads.

Am now going to sleep for the rest of the afternoon.

Book goodies - electronic ones or the old fashioned kind :D

So how full was it and are there any shots of the inside of the hall?

No updates from inside the hall, I am sorry but handhelds don't use assistive tech and there's no general wi-fi for my laptop. In summary:
    • Eight books (paperbacks) for the review queue.
    • A possible review for an ebook coming up soon.
    • Invite to a demo of a new e-reader 10:30 tomorrow
    • Invite to a book launch today at 16:30 - sorry wasn't up to it.
    • Spoke to Amazon about possibly getting sponsorship for the newspaper.
On the RA front spoke to someone about trying to get a backlist back into print.

Kobo no-showed a meeting we booked though the London Bookfair system about ebookangel. We're giving it one more try tomorrow and then I'll leave it. Didn't matter too much, Nielson was happy to chat.

My feet hurt. Full article coming in a few days, once we finish.

And beginning to wonder if I need to carry a white cane and make a medical alert bracelet really obvious. I'm the only person I have seen in there wearing sealed chamber sunglasses and people assume they are for fashion?

You asked Amazon:eek: for sponsorship:eek::eek::eek:? That takes guts!

    Don't ask, don't get.

Kobo has still not confirmed the meeting, so I am probably going to write them off.

What was the e-reader demo like? I'd be interested in seeing what that was about.

Whcih major book chain is it attached to, what can you read on it etc. etc??

I've put the e-reader demo in its own thread. I really liked it, and it would make life easier for the reviewers.
Mentioning reviewers, I know someone liked my work at LBF...

Lemon Drizzle cake? THANK YOU! (and I haven't even done any coding...)

I would love to go next year. Wasn't sure if it was more of a trade thing than a general public thing, if that makes sense.

It's definitely more a trade thing. Several of the large stands have readers available, so there are quite a few authors trying to hawk manuscripts and get picked up. Mostly though it is about trying to do business deals rather than appeal to readers. It doesn't mean it's not a good place to go if you like books and the publishing industry though, just an expensive one (and that's just the convention hall food!)
