I don't know if you've seen this, but you really need to check what Segilola Salami's been saying about bookangel on her blog. There are two posts, one from May and one from December, and they are really awful.

I saw the second post this morning. It is rather sad. How dare volunteers not immediately respond to emails chasing a review they are doing for free that she knows is in the queue? After all, from June to December with one reviewer in hospital, tirial's near loss of sight, and Stephen's death, her review was obviously the club's only priority.

So she got a good review and then accused bookangel of being a phishing scam? Seriously, she ain't worth it.

I was hoping we could save this until the meeting tonight, and handle it without publicly disclosing names. We were aware of her first blog post but not her second until a google alert this morning.

    For clarity:
We can confirm that she submitted her books herself.
She has only used free services and at no point was she asked for money.
She did request details on our review promo service, but never followed up. Her last email message to us was an out-of-office auto-reply over a month ago.

I'm really quite disappointed. As a volunteer site we do our best, so this kind of thing is really not called for.

It's partly my fault, I didn't reply to the chasing emails trying to get the review before it came up on the queue.

I do have the review done - but the last message is her out of office and we were waiting for an actual reply before I put it up. I may just put it up regardless.

I do hope this is the last thing 2016 has to offer.

Wow, that's nasty, but there's always one isn't there.

and if people act like that, they can stay in 2016.

After seeing her posts and taking time to review, I can only say that I agree completely with the club's decision taken at the weekend. I was amazed by how many out-of-office replies had been received from her since September.

For myself, I will merely state that I will no longer review books by this author.

I believe there is one other thing to consider when reading her posts. Her last submission of a free run to our site was after she claimed the site was a phishing scam. Her book was submitted for a free run in December 2016. It came up while I was fixing the database yesterday.

Well, we sent the review to her in early December and she never replied about it. We have held off for months for her views but it has finally gone up.

*Sigh* - I hope a line can be drawn under this all now.

She sounds unreasonable and not worth any effort on our parts. From what I have seen so far, this is a good site that does good work.

Unfortunately it seems this is not staying in the past, as she has just posted it out again on Twitter. I sincerely think it may be time the site took legal action regarding this, as I understand several false claims were exposed in her original article:
    • She submitted the book herself, contrary to her claims.
    • She knew the site was not a phishing scam at the time she wrote the second article.
    • She was still claiming the site was a phishing scam when she sent her second book in for review.
    • She was never asked for money by the site, and she requested details of paid services.

I wish I thought it was co-incidence she brought this up right as we're working on the newsletter/magazine. It's probably more trying to pull the ladder up behind her, and the fact that she's been claiming a long-established site is a phishing scam for two years makes her rather silly if the site doesn't conveniently shut down.

Just keep doing what we do and ignore her. It's all we can do. It would be nice if more of the authors who say we're fantastic over email said it on twitter in response to her, but...

We checked our official logs. Here's the timeline of her contacts by email/contact form. Please remember that July and August were the huge server move and recovery, so everyone was busy including our IT staff and tirial did the manual sweep of the entire history to make sure we did not bring the problem with us.

14/07/2016 16:30 - She used the contact form to tell us the site was no longer redirecting.
24/07/2016 10:02 - She asked if we could review her book before it was published, and complained we showed her book as unavailable.
20/08/2016 09:00 - She said she wasn't contacted and complained we had not replied to her last email (the one that asks a question answered on the reviews page: we don't review pre-releases)
30/08/2016 11:45 - She wrote back saying thanks for replying and said she wanted to promote two books via our expanded distribution. And attached a review copy of a new book.
02/09/2016 21:37 - She wrote back saying thanks for the reply, and insisted on having a phone number. We don't give out numbers or IDs in case of authors behaving badly, which is ironic. She wanted to hold off on the promotion until the second book was reviewed.
10/09/2016 13:55 - She wanted to know when the review of her unreleased book will be done and how we progress from here.
10/09/2016 13:58 - She submitted another edited copy of the book, meaning the reviewer had to start again.

We heard nothing further from her, or at least there's nothing in the main mailbox, and our emails requesting updates from then on, and telling her that the review was done, got auto-replies. The only time we knew she was actually reading them was when we saw the original article from May on her site in December and requested she remove it only for her to put up another one.

She's now hashtagged it and put it on twitter rotate. Authors behaving badly indeed.

Then let's take some positive action about this. We get mainly good feedback (99.99% uptime levels) so here:

    Bookangel Testimonials | Bookangel Boards

If you can find any positive comments about bookangel on blogs or whatever, add them there with a link. We've been going nearly ten years, we should have a few!

Edited to add: Did someone just sticky that?

Me. I will add some of the positive email comments, unless the authors will mind.

  17. I don't care if it took ages and ages for a review, when you're not a paying customer, you have no rights to make demands. That is beyond rude!
