Some of you might remember we tried podcasting the reviews a few years back. We stopped because it was a lot of work and sounded awful.

Right now at RA we're looking at a method of creating audiobooks that works. It isn't perfect, but we have spare capacity, so would you be interested in having us make audio versions of the reviews?

Does it sound any better then our previous attempt? I know Reader and tirial put a lot of work into them, but I think we decided to go in another direction for very good reasons.

No need for a mic, it uses commercial text-to-speech software and I tweak the output in Audacity to make it more natural. The results are good enough for an audio book (just), so they should do for the reviews.

There were four very good reasons why we dumped the previous trial.

And I sincerely hope none of the four 2015 attempts ever see the light of day again.

After our last attempt and that unpleasant reminder that it still dogs me, I have to say, I have reservations. It would be a very nice thing to hear though, and very useful for those of us who no longer see so well, so long as it is done properly.

If it is not too much trouble, could we hear one and then decide?

Oh dear lord, they are worse than I remember. I had to add the music to try to cover the awful microphone hiss. It didn't and then I had to go back to raw audio and remove the hiss first, and then replace the music anyway to cover just how unnatural the voice now sounded... The new ones are better. I swear.

@Reader, I can do one through the new process and put it up as an MP3 if you like.

I'd like to hear it, if you wouldn't mind.

I've done one in MP3 and dropped a link to you in conversation.

Sorry about the US accent. I couldn't find a British child.

So, dear @porridge , did you make it to the pub before the lockdown, or are you lying in the gutter clawing at the door?

That review actually sounds rather good, particularly given the last attempt. I have to say, if they can all be of that standard or above, I am in favour.

Please don't listen to the last attempt. There was no last attempt.

    Other opinions please? I'm on a corona-work-cation, and going <modedit for language>fornicating groundfruit</modedit>!

I can't believe I have to say this to our IT staff but: Language.

I haven't had a chance to hear the sample yet.
