Book Clubs

Book clubs are generally talked about, but I rarely see avid readers join. Throughout the years, my grandmother has talked to me about her book club and I looked at her in envy. The idea of a club focusing on books was enough to make me smile. It wasn't until this year that I actively searched for a book club to join.

Today, it's much easier to join book clubs that fit your lifestyle. People have created many book clubs through social media, making it easier for people that do not have the time to go to a physical meeting.

Have you ever joined a book club?
Is it something you've thought about?
What has stopped you from joining?

I have to say, I was quite surprised to come across this thread, and the first thing I asked myself was, "Are there still any book clubs left in the world?" but now that I think about it, you're right that social media has actually made it even easier to be part of one, and I'm considering joining one now.

Yes I had joined a book club about 15 years ago. But, then things fell off track because life happened. Now, I do look for book clubs, but most are online and have a lot of members, which isn't my idea of a book club. You see to me a book club is a group with a handful of members who know each other by face and can talk about the books they read intimately without 500 strangers looking at what they think about a book.

You'd be amazed at how relevant book clubs are nowadays. I sometimes think that my love for reading is lonesome and that not many people can relate. I learned quickly, after talking about reading to others, that tons of people are still buying books! I thought I was an odd man out on most days.

The most common online platform for book clubs seems to be instagram. My friend started her book club through instagram and is having a bit of success with it. I've also come across a few on facebook, though they're hard to find.

I prefer face to face because meeting up with friends to chat about a book, and work and swap reccomends is a social thing. You can do it online, but it is not the same without coffee and cake. :(
