Book Two of The Taiwan Experience trilogy, Democracy Takes Root, follows on from the first in The Taiwan Experience trilogy, The Seeds of Democracy. The e-book version of Book Two: Democracy Takes Root, like Book One, is divided into three parts. This e-book, The Ethnic Divide, is the first part of Book Two.Book Two I originally scheduled to be published in 2020. However, at that time I knew nothing of the coronavirus whose pandemic was to have such an impact on life almost anywhere in the world. Taiwan was lucky enough to escape the fate of many countries around the world; we have not been badly hit by the virus here. But unfortunately my work is largely depended on circumstances overseas, so I had very little work in 2020. Survival was the theme of 2020, and I didn?t have much time available for writing. Now I?m writing again, but I?m very much aware that many of those people who read the first book in the trilogy may have come to the conclusion that I?ve given up on it. I haven?t – there will be a full, three-book trilogy, as originally promised, even if it?s a little behind schedule. So I?ve decided to bring this long delay to an end by publishing Book Two in serialised form, as soon as each part is finished.

This is the first part. The entire book will also be published both as a complete e-book and as a paperback, but this gives readers another option for reading. Part Two of Book Two will be published sometime in the summer.

The story so far: Book One covered first the history of Taiwan, and then the history of the growing political liberalisation that was taking place in the 1980s, as seen from the perspective of a foreign national (myself) who came to the island in the mid-1980s knowing next to nothing about the place, and eventually took up full citizenship.Book Two: Democracy Takes Root focusses primarily on the 1990s and the first years of the new millennium, although references are made to events both before and after this time period when necessary to provide more context.

Although the books that constitute this trilogy can be read separately, especially if the reader already has some degree of familiarity with the subject, to get the full picture of the entire process of the political and social change that has taken place in Taiwan over a period of several decades, I would still recommend reading from Book One.
