I know it was mentioned in another post about the joy of reading, but is anyone else a fan and regular user of libraries? I feel like I'm in one all the time.

I was. Then my local council decided to remove the books. They believe a library is a room of tablets and beanbags. It is sad.

I started using the library when it became apparent that the budget would be slashed and the library closed because no one used it. It felt as dreadful as possibility of the postal service closing. The library was saved in the end and I've been going regularly ever since.

I love checking out books from the library since they have such a large variety and it saves money. However, I do not read at the library, I always bring my books home.

  5. My mother was a librarian before she retired and I grew up helping out. There's usually only one full-time and one part-time librarian on staff, so programs like literacy for adults, or children's story hour are done by volunteers. Some people don't realize that you can borrow digital books as well. I find it handy.

I do go to the library sometimes but it is usually to get my daughter a book. She loves looking at all the books and picking a few to take home. I usually have a book loaded up on my e reader. To me it's easier to go online and check out a book instead of searching the library.

Used to love going to them, never seem to have the time nowadays as they are always shut as I go passed. Still have a couple of old library cards kicking around somewhere.

Where I used to live we had a really good library. I finished the fiction section, with the exception of romance, but they updated frequently so there was always a new book or two to hunt out. Where I moved to the library has four stacks of fiction, less of non-fiction, and that is it. I had already read most of them, and they haven't changed the stock in the years I have been here. I frequent their stock sales, where they sell all the donated books instead of putting them on the shelves, but that is about it. To my frustration we have a far better public library slightly closer but it is over the county line so I cannot get a card for it, although I spend time there.

Mom used to drop me off at the public library when I was a kid while she went grocery shopping. I loved the huge stacks, the smell of the books and the quietness of the room. I guess that's one of the reasons I went on to be a librarian.

The Friends group organised a book-free day to try to save our local library from the cuts. The response from the local people was anger and annoyance that their library may close. The reaction from the councillor was "Oh, isn't this a lovely open space." It is somewhat depressing.

    That sounds very depressing, Tregaron.

I absolutely love libraries. Being around that many books and that old book smell…I just love it. Plus, who doesn't like renting books rather than always having to buy them? There are loads of fun classes and workshops at the ones near me as well.

But then you have to give them back...*wail*

I should go to libraries more often. We have a whole slew of them where I live and I have only been into the children's sections to let my kid play. Seems like a real waste now that I think about it.

I know tirial. It breaks my heart to give up a book. I have a room in my home with nothing but shelves of books. Only a book lover would understand the need to "own" them.

I've previously worked in libraries so they have a special place for me. I've been borrowing more eBooks lately, but I do love to visit and browse. It's also a nice money and space saver for me. I only have so many bookshelves and they're full.

Borrowing can be a bit of a test drive though.

Have you yet expanded to the newest and upgraded floor-based deep-pile face-up display system?

I am afraid I don' know what that is Tregaron.. Can you describe it or send a link? I'll look it up. At the current time I have started double stacking my books. At some point I will have to donate some to the local library but......not just yet. :)

I think Tregaron is pulling your leg, Donna. That fancy system is stacking your books on the floor, or a table, or anything else with a flat surface. It's only recommended in the direst of circumstances. I tried to pull a book out of a system like that once and was almost crushed. The bright side is my friend witnessed it and bought me a new bookcase for my birthday. It would've been a fitting way to go though.

Ahhhh! I can't believe I fell for that. HA HA. There was a local used book store that used that system and I would go sit on the floor and immerse myself in whatever looked interesting. Getting books from the bottom was a little tricky though. :)
