Kindle for Linux (?)

I use a Linux box as many people know, like the rest of you (who heard me swearing while I assembled it) already know. I've also put this on Laptops for a few of the other users.

With the distro I normally use, installation is as simple as downloading the installer and double-clicking. Wine (WINdows Emulator) does the rest. Kindle 1.10 to 1.14 have run fine under Wine for years now.

The latest update, 1.15, does not. It effectively bricked my laptop install, causing it to crash on start-up. I ended up reinstalling 1.10 over the top, which proved my content was still present. I re-upgraded to 1.14,. which worked, but every time I have tried 1.15 it breaks the whole program. I've asked a few others, including someone with the same set-up and they've had the same result, including a complaint from an XP user who deleted his install after giving up. One of them was going to speak to Amazon this morning and I'll pass the feedback on.

As Amazon are turning off Kindle for PC 1.14 at the end of March, this is a problem for Linux users. Cloud Reader doesn't work on many Linux browsers, and doesn't show all the books.

(Why they don't repackage 1.14 as "Kindle for Wine", add a flag to let it access Amazon if used on Wine systems, and get a whole market that is otherwise going to go to Calibre and epub - and shut up all us annoying Linux people who keep asking why they can support Blackberry but not Linux? - \me).

Is anyone else having trouble with Kindle 1.15 on the Cloud Reader? I can't get the Kindle for PC version to work at all, and when I try reading books on the Cloud Reader I keep getting asked to log back in every fifteen minutes or so.

I'll give it a whirl, but I haven't had any problems recently. Then again, I keep getting distracted by other shiny things, so who knows.

Had a go, and mine seems to be working ok. So not sure really.
