Giving books for presents

I love reading, and would like to encourage everyone around me to read more. Unfortunately there are some friends and family members who say things like "I don't read", like that's OK! What kind of book would you get someone like that to tempt them to start reading books?

It would depend on the person's personality. I would give a joke book to a guy that had a good sense of humor. Maybe a Chicken Soup book to a girl with a tender heart. Anything to get them reading.

I agree, it would depend on their personality. Maybe if there is a show or movie someone really likes that is based on a book, you could start there. There are also some fun subscription boxes for books out there you could give a try.

I love giving books as gifts, especially to the littles. They must be trained early. :D

When I've given books to people who "don't read" I go with something related to what they like or their personality. I've had guy friends tell me they only read in the bathroom; bathroom reader it is. My Aunt is a cat person so I gave her I Could Pee on This and Other Poems by Cats. She loved it. The volumes of The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories are also great gifts.

As readers, we tend to think novels, but poetry, trivia, and other types of segmented books might be better since people are used to consuming information in bits and pieces.

I've got the book "I Could Pee on This and Other Poems by Cats" . A friend of mine gave it to me and even though I've read it so many times, I still laugh my head off at the poems. They are all so funny.

I Could Pee on This and Other Poems by Cats sounds really funny! I'm going to have to buy this one for myself and a couple other cat lovers in my life. Thanks for sharing, you two!

When people claim that they don't read, I always wonder if they're serious or just trying to be cutesy. I can't imagine being chuffed about that. Well Belle, did you give it a go? If so, what book did you gift?

I've learned over time that people who say that usually mean they don't read novels in particular. Reading magazines, comics or graphic novels, and other media counts too. Just not everyone thinks that way.
