The princess bride is actually an old book (it was written in 1973.) However, I recently came upon the book and was pleasantly surprised by how engaging the book was. I picked up the book at a book exchange, and honestly I wasn't expecting it to be much of a read. However, I was bored and decided to just 'have a look'. I ended up putting in 3 hours of reading, and even forgot to have lunch! :D

I'll try to give a synopsis without too many spoilers:

The book is the story of Buttercup, a young lady from Florin. Buttercup falls in love with a farm hand on her farm called Westley. However, they cannot marry since there is such a large gap in their social standing. Westley decides to set out to make a fortune so that they may marry, but his ship gets attacked and he is presumed to be dead. Buttercup is heartbroken, but gets an offer to marry the prince of Florin. What follows is a lot of fast paced action, which culminates with Westley storming the royal castle to save his beloved.

The movie adaptation is also on Netflix by the same name for those interested! I fell in love with this book, and I recommend you give it a try!

    Cheers!

If you've only just read it mate, you're about 25 years behind the rest of us!

(Didn't think this was a Bookangel review.)

Haha that's probably true, as my reading interests often tend to be more modern titles. I chanced upon this book and really wanted to share my experience!

But I'm really curious: if I'm 25 years behind, what are 'the books of today?'

Welcome to the boards! A few books we have liked include Liz Lund's books (Cozy Mystery), Spiderstalk (Horror), Dinosaur Lake (a guilty pleasure for half the board). You can find more four and five stars on the Reviews page of the main site.

I hate to say it, but if you're looking for the next big thing or the 'books of today', you might be better off on Goodreads than here. Bookangel is for readers focusing on indie books, and trying to find the readable and sometimes very good ones that have been overlooked because they have been swamped in the dross. There is a lot of dross.

Not all self-published or small press books are rubbish, but unfortunately many are. If you've picked an ebook up free off Amazon and it was actually good, then this is a good place to mention it for chatting.

Thanks a lot, @Tregaron. I am sorry if my interest was unclear by the above post. I really like to read lesser known books and find 'gems in the rubbish.' I will often pick up books not paying attention to whether they are mainstream or not. However, as of yet I don't have a reliable source for suggestions, and am still looking around the web.

Just a question: Do the books need to be free, or can I talk about ones that are paid too? Thanks in advance!

P.S. Dinasour Lake actually seems good. Hehe.

Hi! Bookangel covers just about any indie books. The only thing is they have to have been free at some time to show up on the main site.

If you like the Princess Bride, you might like this:
The reviewer does videos comparing book and film versions in depth. Some of them are funny, but watch out for the Dune one.

I've never read the book, but I'm almost word perfect on the film.

    Inconceivable, I know.

Hey @tirial thanks for that video, it was pretty spot on (though I lost a lot of time watching his other videos after haha). And thanks for the info on the site, I plan to pivot to indie books but life keeps getting in the way!
