Wheels and Wings

Pages: 181

When sixteen-year-old Lilly makes a wish on a shooting star it’s not for money, or popularity, or even a boyfriend. Her only wish is to walk again. It’s a wish that will change her life forever…

Every thing has changed. Lilly loved to shop. She loved to go to the beach and hang out with friends. Now she’s afraid to go out and ashamed to be seen. Worst still, she thinks no boy is ever going to want her.

Seth is fiercely independent. He has had to grow up fast. When he meets Lilly, he finally wants to let someone in… But he is desperate to keep his secret. He is only willing to go so far…

Magic has offered them a chance. Will love give them wings?

"I couldn't put this down. A touching, poignant and gripping young adult story, notable for its stunning portrayal of dealing with disability."

A sixteen year old girl, wheelchair-bound after a sudden illness, finds herself sharing dreams with a young boy. But as she begins to take control over her own waking life, the dreams begin to take a darker turn. As she unravels the mystery that is Seth's waking life, she finds that courage takes many forms.

This is very well-written, in a clear and direct style that is easy to follow. The characters are realistic and sympathetic, the plot is nicely paced, and the story gripping. The contrast between the grind and despair of daily life and the hope in her dreaming life is touching and poignant.

As a chronic pain sufferer, the description of the main character closing in on herself, doing less and less of the things she enjoys to avoid the pain it causes her is far too close to home. The difficulties of life in a wheelchair are not glossed over.

I couldn't put this down.

A touching, poignant and gripping young adult story, notable for its stunning portrayal of dealing with disability. While it is written for teenage and young adult readers, an older audience may also enjoy it. I certainly did.

Note: At the time this review went live the book was not available on Amazon. I sincerely hope this is temporary.
