Introduction

Aurora’s body rattled with nervousness. She peeked from behind the stage curtain and caught a scary glimpse of the crowd. It was packed. It must have held everybody she knew and hundreds more from out of town. This was her big chance to dazzle them. It was her moment in the spotlight she’d wanted since the age of six. But something wasn’t right. Trevor wasn’t there.

He’d warned her earlier that day that a chance at a job interview might interfere. They even had a brief argument over it. And Aurora recalled every word.

“Honey, I really could use your support. The talent show is a big deal.”

“I understand, Rory, but this job interview is important too.”

“More important than me?” she asked, lips curled into a pout.

“Of course not. But…”

“But, what?” she demanded, hands on hips, face still fixed in a pout.

“Honey, don’t you understand why I’m seeking this job?”

“Yes, I get it” Aurora groaned, rolling her eyes. “The jobs in the financial industry are very lucrative.”

“Well, yeah. But it’s not just about money. It’s about me being able to take care of you so we can live the kind of life we want. A family. A home. Maybe even in New York!”

Aurora’s pout melted away. “You promise you’ll actually be around once we get that home? And you won’t be out all the time, scrambling after more money?”

“Rory, you know I can’t stay away from those green eyes for too long.”

She smirked, feeling her defenses crumble.

“Look, I’ll call Mr. Charleston and ask if we can reschedule the interview.”

Aurora’s face exploded in a grin.

“But I’m not making any promises,” he added. “Competition in banking is fierce, and they could fill this spot with somebody else in an instant.”

“Long as you make that phone call, I’m happy.”

But hours later, gawking at the huge crowd gathering, Aurora wasn’t happy. When their argument ended, she wondered how much she really mattered to Trevor. Does he care more about me than some job with a big-shot financial company? When she gazed out into the crowd and saw an empty seat where he should have been, she seemed to have gotten her answer. Wearing a frown Aurora stepped away from the curtain and prepared to warm her voice up. But Trevor’s absence nagged her enough to take another shot at contacting him.

She pulled out her cellphone and checked it from messages. It had been littered by friends and family wishing good luck in the talent show. Nothing from Trevor. So she took a deep breath and tried again. She dialed and patiently waited for an answer.

“Hello?”

“Trevor! So… did you make that phone call?”
