When Chris Tallis returns to Myanmar to lay his own demons and help the ruby cutters export their jewels directly to European customers, he encounters Carol Murphy, a cardiac surgeon on a medical mission, and Jon Palmer, a weird Secret Intelligence Service officer. He realises he loves Carol when she is injured in an explosion at a children’s pageant. Chris is caught up in a covert US-UK night incursion at Gong Lok mine in the mountains in which twenty-eight Chinese scientists are ‘eliminated’ by the British special operations unit. When Carol’s air ambulance to Singapore is cancelled, Professor Lee, hosting the medical mission, arranges for her evacuation and treatment in Beijing. Chris accompanies her, flying out her mother to be with her. A fanatical US senator fomenting an ‘early winnable war’ with China is revealed. Chris determines to expose the role of the British prime minister.
