I don't usually review interactive books, but I thought I'd give this one a try. The idea is simple: You, Alex and Rhian are exploring a deserted mansion when the ghost hunt gets a little too spooky for comfort. Can you all get out?
This is a classic "Choose your Own Adventure" with each section on its own page, followed by links where you can make your choice and go to the next page. It worked in the cloud reader very well, with separate pages per text and URLs that linked correctly. The only problem is that a Kindle's "Furthest location read" messes up slightly - it takes you to the furthest page on, which might not be where you were.
Bolingbroke Manor is short, it is simple, and it is extremely engaging. I'm hardly the target market and I played it several times to get different endings and try out different paths. It has a selection of endings including "You are dead" and "You have escaped without defeating the ghost"
It's light and amusing fun. Get it while it's free, or if you like Choose Your Own Adventure, get it at any time. It doesn't have a combat system, and there are a lot of one hit fails, but it ties together well no matter what route you take, and several sections are reused in ways that make the book longer to play than it's length.
The only real downsides are that it is short, and after several playthroughs it gets a little repetitive.
I'm giving it a three, but people looking for something to amuse children or younger readers, or something fun to do on the way to a halloween party will probably love this.
I do not have enough experience with the one choose or create your own adventure type stories, and this seems like a good one to really give it a go and see where it takes me. The title is certainly interesting and raising some questions.
