Fitness is the ability to perform a certain task. For the Royal Marines that was the ability to carry your injured oppo (plus yours and his kit) into safe ground. The ability to march 30 miles across Dartmoor. The ability to control and manoeuvre your own body weight up ropes, over walls, through tunnels. It sounds hideous, however for me this should be standard across the entire population.
Granted, not everyone has access to the equipment that the military have in their armoury, but it isn’t needed. The worst thrashings* of my life have all been on exercise with a just a hill to play with.
Today I can reflect on my experiences in university and couple it together with my time in the military to form a bulletproof, fool proof method to stay fit, healthy and robust, physically and mentally.
