The initial drafts for this book were written in an instructive manner that appealed to reason and logic. When those drafts were reviewed, the feedback informed that I was not successful in communicating the essence of my thought.
A chance remark from a friend perplexed and challenged me. “Use your imagination,” he said, observing my frustration with the feedback. An Einstein poster hanging in our home with the words, imagination is more important than reason’, alerted me as I walked by, to the power of imagination and story.
Composite characters were created to engage in life situations. Everyone has a story and, when we allow stories to speak to our hearts rather than our heads, when we apply them to our own lives rather than someone else’s life, then, and only then, are we touched by their depth and meaning.
The tone and content of the material are not objective, as they are shaped by who I am and by what I do and by what I have experienced.
My intent is to make the reader familiar and comfortable with the concept of death and to examine whether or not its meaning, consequences and perspectives are much more a part of our lives than we may suspect.
As well as having experienced death in my own life, I sought, early in my training as a priest, to confront physical ‘death and dying by working on the Oncology ward of a major teaching hospital.
In my experience, people from all sectors of life are wrestling with many issues concerning death and dying. In arriving at our answers, it sometimes helps to hear someone else asking the same questions and the answers that they have arrived at. This book is an attempt to create such an environment.
