Belene Island is both a love story and an escape thriller set in Bulgaria in the early days of Communism. Tsvetan, an exceptional young man from a simple family, sets his sights on becoming a Catholic priest, an ambition continually called into question by his enduring love for the beautiful Tatyana. Through the chaos of war they are separated and Tsvetan, now a priest, is persecuted and incarcerated on Belene Island Labour Camp. Life in the labour camp is an endless pattern of exhaustion, suffering and sheer terror. Torture, rape, harsh punishment and death are part of everyday life.
Throughout Tsvetan struggles to choose between his vows to God and the woman he has always loved.
