The scene of the crime was a beautiful Tudor country house, Boarded Barn Cottage, at Scholar Green, near Congleton, in Cheshire. On 5th November 1979 the two 39-year-old mothers, Ann Carryer and Christine Blood, had gone to the house to take an inventory of the furniture and fittings. The 16th century house, valued then at £150,000, had belonged to Mrs Carryer’s widowed mother, who had died a few weeks before. After sorting out the contents of the house the two friends had planned to go for a small celebration; it was Christine’s 39th birthday.
The women arrived separately during the afternoon. Christine drove from her home in the village of Meaford near Stone, Staffordshire, in her Fiat Mirafiori estate car with her two black Labradors in the back; Ann came from her family home at Willoughbridge, near Market Drayton in Shropshire, in her powerful Scimitar sports coupe.
