It’s the last days of summer at the Triple L Ranch and Samantha Larkin was preparing to take the herd down from, the north ridge before the snow. Samantha has been running the ranch for the past three years after her father passed on. She and her foreman Bill Clark head off to the north ridge when she sees a stranger slumped over against the rocks on the side of the trail. Thinking he’s dead she realizes he’s been shot in the back and still alive. Too far from town to get him to the doctor she decides to take him back to the ranch and tells Bill to go on. It was touch and go for the first twenty four hours until the stranger finally opened his eyes.
The mystery of the stranger still shed no light on why was there or why he was shot. The story he gave was that he was here to work as a wrangler for Nathan Cosgrave. Cosgrave had the biggest horse ranch in Wyoming and had a full bunkhouse of wrangler’s. Why he would need another wrangler didn’t make must scene. Seems the strangers name was Reed McClure and had made a name for himself as a wrangler like his dad before him down in Texas across the panhandle. It was his fame that caught Cosgrave’s eye and sent for him, or so he said. Reed found being at the Triple L pleasant and he soon really wanted to stay.
Samantha had been raised more or less like a boy since her mother died when she was three, giving birth to her son. Her father was so lost at the death of his wife and the son he had longed for, Samantha wanted only to please him. She was able to rope, ride and shoot better than any man on the ranch, trying so hard to be the son he lost long ago. Though how to be a lady she was completely at a loss, though Rosa the housekeeper tried to teach her Sam just found it to be too much trouble and not worth it. Not until Reed McClure came into her live and caught her eye. She hires him to break Black Jack her stallion at Cookie’s suggestion and though they have a few disagreements at first, there was a strong feeling growing in both of them. He knew one day soon he would have to tell her who he really was and why he was there but he didn’t want to lose the chance he might lose her in the process.
