Why do Scandinavian people actually kill themselves?
Albert Camus once wrote: There is only one really serious philosophical problem and that is suicide. Deciding whether or not life is worth living is to answer the fundamental question in philosophy. All other questions follow from that. The phenomenon of suicide has accompanied the mankind from the dawn of history. It constitutes an inherent civilization and cultural element in human history. The numerous cases of suicide appear with varying intensity and they face with different assessment.
Unfortunately, regardless of the evolving and developing world, the existing of this phenomenon has not stopped. On the contrary – shortly after the beginning of the XX century, a substantial increase of number of suicides took place. The progress of civilization, a fast pace of life, rapid transformations and social crises have a negative impact on human behavior and in many cases they lead to self-destructive behaviors.
Nowadays, one of the fastest changing regions of the world is Europe, especially its northern parts. Scandinavia as a peninsula has always been rather an isolated element of European continent. Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark are connected by common culture, history and even the weather. Sadly, another factor that links those countries is also the phenomenon of suicide.
In this book I will cover the issue of so-called “northern depression” – the disease that during the last couple of decades touched thousands of Scandinavians. In many cases, the overall result of this disease was suicide of people suffering. I will try to examine what are the causes of northern depression and why do Scandinavians regularly kill themselves. Is the geographical location the main influencing factor? What social groups are the most vulnerable to this threat? I will answer to this question on the next pages of the book.
