Clem looks like a small German Shephard puppy, but is actually an alien from Kax, not that any human would know it. Today is his first day to go to the Kaxian headquarters to try to be a defender. Instructed by his father to be on time, Clem starts his journey. But as he is travelling along, he is distracted by a ginger cat that he chases, before encountering a pair of Niques, in the guise of a pair of Chihuahuas. The Niques are as alien to the planet as the Kaxians and they do not get on, although both agree to avoid telling humans the truth about dogs. Once he overcomes his instincts, Clem runs off out of town to the Kaxian Headquarters where he is admitted to join alongside many other puppies also there for their first day. But his dream of becoming a defender is dashed when he is assigned to be a miner instead. The reason is because he did not do as the first twenty puppies had done and as his father told him to do, which was to be on time.

This is a short sweet children's tale part science fiction and part cute, fluffy, puppy dog. The cover is an inducement to read with three adorable puppies on the front, how could I resist. The plot is fairly simple only describing the first day of Clem's adventures, but it neatly lays out the world, both familiar and different. As well as introducing Clem's family and his new friends with the minimum of fuss, it lets the reader of know of the conflict between the Kax and the Niques. The puppies in the story are, especially Clem of course, quite cute and act in a puppy-like manner, both in their thoughts and the instinctive behaviours that they know they have to stop, but just can't help it. The writing style works well for it's audience, the meanings are always clear and simple, which makes for a good book to learn from.

The formatting of the story is fine, although it would be nice for the extra content to be marked as so where the following stories are linked to at the back of the story. I didn't notice any grammar or spelling mistakes, at least, not ones that removed me from the story.

Overall, it is a quick childrens story, good for expanding their vocabulary while still keeping it interesting.
