All Ellen ever wanted was to be part of a happy family, but her mother disappeared and her father died. The only person she has left is her grandfather. He wants her to take an ancient book to a library on the planet where it was written. It is important to the future generations of the family and needs to be repaired. Ellen will do anything for her grandfather. She will never let him down.
Ellen travels to the planet with the intention of getting the book repaired and returning to Earth as fast as possible. When she arrives, it is not the Utopian fantasy world he described. A war between the elements has escalated, and it is not safe for strangers to travel alone. Her errand turns into a survival quest.
The inhabitants of the planet show an uncomfortable amount of interest in her. She does not know why. They think she may be the Farthing, the girl in the prophecy who will end a disaster that started the five-hundred-year war. She is from the right family. She must be tested to see if she is the one.
Ellen’s efforts to get to the library are interrupted while the Pansophians send her on a quest to test her. She must go along with what they want to be allowed to go to the library. She has to save the livelihood of her family and keep her grandfather’s good opinion.
