The story takes place largely in London and the surrounding countryside. It focuses on an underground magical society that functions beneath the normal life of the city. (Magic can be accessed by the willpower of the user. A small amount of ritual often accompanies spell-casting. Most of the traditional European mythical creatures exist in this world, including vampires, werewolves, banshees, etc.) This underground society is led by a tyrannical man named Quip. (Quip is capable and intelligent, but hopelessly greedy. He rules by force; he has a team of thugs called the Teeth, made up mostly of werewolves.) The main characters of the story are part of a small band of magic users who have formed a resistance against Quip’s regime.

Much of this first installment to the story is told in flashbacks. Clara, formerly Sean’s lover and a member of the resistance, has run away. Sean, thrown meanwhile into prison, is deeply wounded by her disapperance. It’s revealed that, in fact, Clara ran because she is pregnant. But she’s a vampire, and it’s very unlikely that she’ll be able to carry the child to term. She leaves to spare Sean pain, and because she’s afraid he’ll hate her for losing the baby. When the child is born alive, she’s shocked, and tries to return home to Sean. But he’s in prison, and she can’t reach him.
