Belle, a gorgeous but shy graduate student, attends a conference for psychology grade students in L.A. By chance, she meets Ryan, a charming man who works in finance. Even though she’s engaged (albeit, in a crumbling relationship), Belle and Ryan are instantly attracted to each other, and he begs her for a date. Belle refuses, feeling that it wouldn’t be right to cheat on her fiancé. After a disastrous night, Ryan is desperate for another chance with Belle, so he attends her talk at the conference. She’s again reminded by how smitten she is, and she suggests that the two of them have a platonic dinner. What follows is not exactly platonic, and Belle leaves the hotel in shame, desperate to make things right with her fiance. But when she arrives home, she discovers that he’s been cheating on her, for years. They break up, and Belle and Ryan arrange a second date, in Chicago.
