Entirely uninterested when my husband’s company proposed we live as expats in Denmark for a year, I was completely surprised to realize how right the decision felt to move our family. Willing to open myself up for the adventure I hoped it would be, I was thrilled to discover the growth that came from a year of uncertainty and the upheaval of my sense of normalcy. Living in Denmark was maybe the best thing that ever happened to this structure-loving mom and our family.
I wrote this book to show you that you can live abroad-even if you don’t think you want to. I hope to illustrate how even a small town family from a rural life can successfully live and thrive in an international city. Home has always been, and still is, my favorite place to be. But, because of Denmark, I have acquired a taste for travel that has changed me. In Denmark, I met friends and experienced life in new ways. I lived the grandest adventure of all-the ups and downs of daily life with a big family-but I did it in a foreign country. We had to figure out how to do the expat gig, go to school, eat, fit in, and travel by bike and train-all without speaking Danish. It was hilarious, exhausting, thrilling, and life changing.
You, too, will have adventures. You will have struggles. And it will all be good for you in more ways than you can imagine. If you choose to live abroad-or even among people and places new to you-for a season, it will likely be a most unforgettable chapter of your life.
