Imagine being able to spread your wings and begin a brand new life. It could be a life filled with new friends, new experiences, and even new adventures. If you are willing to take the risk, you may encounter someone special, who touches your heart and creates that special feeling that only new friends or lovers share. But, be careful. There may be some unexpected twists and turns, and you may surprise yourself.

Annie Curtis is a thirty-eight year old university instructor from Madison, Wisconsin. Her husband of twelve years has an affair with one of his graduate students. Annie is devastated by this life-changing event, but begins to put the pieces of her life back together. She has some funny dating experiences. Her best friend, Monica helps Annie with a makeover of her nerdy, professor image. With her encouragement, Annie embarks on a summer road trip to New England. She makes a vow to be open to new experiences and people. A short time into her trip, she sends Monica an email. Here is an excerpt.

“I’m not sure how to describe this next part. I met someone a few days ago, and we have sort of clicked. I haven’t had so much fun in a long time. I even rode on a motorcycle! You told me to look for adventure and find my passion. I think I have succeeded. And Monica, her name is Katie. Surprise!”

Katie Martin is a single woman from New Hampshire, who has experienced a significant loss in her life. She is the owner of a storefront business in downtown Portsmouth that is both a bookstore and colorful café. Annie and Katie’s lives intersect in this eclectic establishment. Annie finds herself attracted to Katie and is surprised when her attraction evolves into something more. They share an intimate evening at Katie’s lake house, each revealing the loss that they have experienced. Annie has her first sensual encounter with another woman.

Annie and Katie’s story explores the universal human themes of responding to loss and change, and awakening friendship, romance and passion. They share their summer of discovery with some endearing friends and neighbors. Together they experience the challenges of prejudice and stereotypes, and the beauty that can be found in differences.
