In the spring of 1814 when English shop keeper Ephraim Bradford first stepped on American soil he knew that he was bound to work for the pirate Jean Lafitte but he had no idea that the cost of his passage across the ocean would lead him into war with his homeland. Nor did he expect that on the banks of the Mississippi River he would meet the love of his life.
On the day Ephraim landed in America, a thousand miles away in the bustling city of Baltimore, Charlotte Fuller reluctantly spoke her wedding vows to a swindler twice her age. When her drunken husband falls off a ship taking them to New Orleans, Charlotte is left stranded, alone and penniless, in the Crescent city. After weeks of despair and near death she settles for the only opportunity she has to survive by taking a job in a Bourbon Street bordello.
One sunny summer afternoon Ephraim and Charlotte meet in a French Quarter market. Young Ephraim immediately falls deeply in love but with the fear that this beautiful young woman will learn that he’s part of a band of pirates. Similarly, her love is mired with the fear that this handsome young man will learn that she is one of the Belles of Bourbon Street.
When the War of 1812 comes quite literally to Jean Lafitte’s doorstep the Governor of Louisiana attacks Lafitte’s island and Ephraim is arrested and imprisoned for his connection with the pirate. Ephraim is eventually released but becomes the only link between Andrew Jackson’s piecemealed militia and Jean Lafitte’s army of pirates.
Pirates or Patriots tells the story of how a young Englishman falls in love with a Maryland farm girl only to risk his life and his love in the Battle of New Orleans.
