Which is the path to truth, the path of faith or the path of doubt?
This question torments Devin Todd.
The inner struggle has begun to consume Devin so much that every area of life has suffered. He has been unable to find the motivation to exercise. He no longer pays his bills on time and he has received an eviction notice. His girlfriend broke up with him because he stopped paying attention to her. His friends stopped calling because he stopped answering. He became an unproductive worker and lost his job. But none of that seemed to matter to Devin. The only thing he cared about was finding an answer to the question that consumed his thoughts.
One day Devin begins to hear voices. All day every day, the voices say only one line: “Go to the court and your question will be answered.”
Eventually, Devin listens.
The voices lead Devin to a rundown basketball court on the edge of town where the city and the forest meet. Once Devin is standing at center court, people begin walking out of the woods and the city. Those out of the forest are religious founders like Abraham, Jesus, Muhammad, Confucius, Lao Tzu and the Buddha. Those out of the city are famous skeptics from history like Socrates, Aristotle, Descartes, Voltaire, Marx and Darwin. The two teams tell Devin that they are going to play a game of basketball and they want him to be the referee.
Devin recognizes the voices of each man as one of the voices that had been telling him to come to the court in order to find the answer to his question. He agrees to referee the game, hoping that by the end he will know which path will lead him to truth: the path of faith or the path of doubt.
