Organized chaos was everywhere as several ambulances, squad cars from the FBI, DEA, and local Sheriff’s department all worked to get survivors out of a set of underground holding cells. Melissa McKinney shook her head again in wonder as she watched emergency staff assist several small figures when they couldn’t walk on their own. They handed them into the hands of professionals who hopefully would help put their lives back together. Her team had been on the trail of a cartel specializing in designer drugs coming into the United States across the Mexican borders and instead found the nest of human traffickers and gunrunners. Now all of the alphabets of law enforcement agencies were working to keep the push of reporters and locals back from the scene.
As Lead DEA agent assigned to the case, Melissa looked at the national news crews with their telescoping cameras and flashy reporters pushing to outdo each other for a story to propel them into stardom when their suspects could be standing right next to them. The local Sheriff’s department tried to keep them all behind the yellow crime tape but she realized this was getting out of hand, fast.

Melissa McKinney is not one of the top DEA field agents because she’s pretty. She’s one of the best agents the DEA has, and she is right in the middle of a case that puts her back in her hometown. She fled her hometown for college, was recruited because she was the top of her class in criminal law, and has been on the fast track ever since. However, few know her secrets and even fewer colleagues are aware she was raised in the Texas community. Now she has to fight her demons as memories and heartache tries to bring her down. To top it off, her “special talents” are working against her this time because of one very special FBI agent from Louisiana.
Tyron DuValle has kept track of Melissa’s career since she graduated from the Academy. He volunteered to work on the Task Force, which Melissa’s boss forms, but few know that he actually has a history with the feisty DEA agent. Ty is still the same toned and rock hard male specimen he was before, and only has eyes for the woman he was force to leave in the small Texas town at the age of seventeen. He’s even more shocked when Melissa pretends not to know him because Ty knows he hasn’t changed that much. As the case evolves the two of them are thrown together to protect the kids that were found in the caves outside of Amarillo, hunt down the kingpin who is responsible for the mess they discovered, and try to keep their hands off of each other in the process.
