An adventure story for 7-9 year olds of a small girl called Lauren walking with her dog above a Scottish loch. Her dog digs for rabbits but discovers a secret passage which leads down to a hideaway. In the hideaway, she meets the last of the Freshwater Nautili who tell her of the Loch Ness monster and where she can meet it. On meeting the monster – he really is a gentle, mischievous creature though somewhat enormous – they decide to teach a couple of locals a lesson: two lads had been ripping money off tourists telling tales of having seen the monster without actually having seen it and organising trips to view it. They were in for a total surprise when they did actually see it – and with a little girl riding on its head!
