Did young Lord Aylesford take the school Charter as a prank, or is there a more sinister purpose behind the document’s theft? That is the issue that brings Gerard de Montclaire and his associate Sir Francis FitzMaurice to their Old School at Harrow-on-the-Hill. It is 1900, and if the Charter is not found, the school foundation–close on a million pounds–will devolve to the founder’s descendants. Aylesford seems to have been obsessed with Lord Byron and leaves behind a series of poetical clues to challenge the great detective to find the missing Charter. Trouble is, what appears at first to be a mere schoolboy prank quickly turns to murder, and murder is never a prank.
