If you have been living the day to day pressures and struggles of doing maintenance, then this is definitely a book for you. Life of a maintenance is typically a struggle as most industries end up being reactive all the times. As borrowing from Keith Moubly’s words that 17 percent of maintenance problems are maintenance induced or simply done by maintenance, this means that 83 percent of maintenance problems are not induced by maintenance and come from other areas/departments of your organization. You may consider your industry to have a world class quality product, a world class service, a world class safety or you can declare that your industry have a world class facilities, but speaking about world class maintenance is a different story and only a few companies ever reach this stage. While many industries will try, only the thoroughbred will succeed. This book is for every maintenance out there who wants to improve the reliability of their equipment and assets in order to optimize their operations and dramatically reduce the cost of doing maintenance. Let me be honest with you, achieving world class maintenance will not happen overnight, a week, month or even a year. It will take time but it is not impossible. Read this book and it will provide you a better understanding and perspective on how to reach that level that every industry seek for. This book depicts the life and struggles of maintenance in seeking better ways and means in improving how to manage and maintain their equipment and assets. The Author shares his passion and experience about the day to day struggles in the life of a maintenance. What is interesting about the Author and his book is that even though he hails from the Philippines the problems, issues and struggles we face in maintenance is generic and can be felt by any industry from whatever place, race and culture. This book contains real life stories, struggles and actual experiences by the Author in his career in maintenance and currently as a Reliability and Maintenance Consultant.
The book is easy to absorb as it is structured into three parts which are the Basics, the Strategies and the Advance Disciplines. The Twelve Disciplines are grouped accordingly into these three parts. Maintenance often time seek for advance ways in dealing with their everyday problems and issues. The message of this book is simple and straightforward, that there is no better way to start by going back to the “Basics” and addressing these very small problems we have in our plant. Big problems, unplanned break-downs and catastrophic failures are just an accumulation of small problems that has always been ignored and mostly neglected in the first place. The Author strongly emphasize the importance operators play in addressing these basic equipment condition and is considered a partner with maintenance on this shared responsibility they have towards their equipment. It is very difficult or impossible for maintenance people to transcend from a reactive to a proactive mode if operators will not be involved along the way. When the Basics had been set and well established, then maintenance can move on with the different maintenance and reliability strategies which are explained in detail on this book. Each Chapter covers a specific maintenance discipline. Chapter 14 of this book covers an implementation plan on how to proceed with these 12 disciplines by understanding where the current maintenance is and bringing the maintaining herd on the direction which they want to go. Finally, the Author would like to share his message on the Conclusion part of this book and share his actual experience on what it takes for an industry to reach a level of World Class Maintenance Management Stage.
