Kari is starting up a new cafe with the idea of the patrons being able to play and watch a set of cats, each of which is up for adoption. With only a few days left to go, she is putting the finishing touches including hiring the new staff. One of these is Colin, a military veteran with PTSD looking for something to get him back into a regular life. Kari comes up with the idea of matchmaking him with her sister Marley, who is baking for the cafe. However, on the first day that the cats arrive, Colin’s PTSD is triggered and Kari finds herself beginning to wonder and care about Colin. Colin still wonders, after his discharge, if he is right for another relationship at that point. As the opening day approaches they find themselves being drawn to each other, but still uncertain if they should even be together, as the situation family and friends, all conspire to push them in the right direction.

This is a sweet and charming romance set in a cafe with cats, so what’s not to like about it. The plot is fairly simple but neatly fits over the few weeks and the burgeoning relationship and feelings that Kari and Colin have for each other. I do like that the book takes it’s time with the situation and doesn’t rush it. I also enjoyed that everyone else in the story seemed to have a better idea of what was happening between Kari and Colin than the two leads. The story switches viewpoint from Kari to Colin and so we can see their viewpoints and misconceptions quite clearly as they struggle to understand that they are a fit for each other. It also helps in showing how they interact with everyone and how they feel about the situation without having to be told everything. The other characters round out the group and all provide a little extra to the situation leaving it open for many more stories in the future. The only person who seems slightly out of place is Adam, Kari’s long time friend, who seems to be jealous of the situation, but it is left unresolved by the end and likely to be the plot for a future story.

The book is well edited, a couple of minor spelling mistakes, but it is clear when the viewpoint switches between Kari and Colin. Some of the scenes do feel a little like filler and there is little tension within the story. Any of the issues that arise are swiftly fixed and a lot of things just seem to work out happily. Thi9s does come with a recipe for Cookie Dough Brownies, as made in the story, at the back so you can make your own as well as excerpts from two more of the author’s stories. If you like what you read here, there are plenty more to enjoy.

Overall, this is a sweet book full of happy romance, certainly a good one for fans of the genre and perhaps for anyone looking for a lazy read to while away the hours.
