...A short historical tale that never really starts and finishes all too soon. ...

Liath is the sixteen year old daughter of an Irish merchant who has been chosen to take a message to the Pope in Rome from her home in Dublin. The petition she is carrying is ask for God’s aid in stopping the famine. Accompanying her is Garrick, hired by her father to assist Liath on her way. She sets out from Dublin across the sea to Holyhead and then starts down through Wales visiting a soothsayer on the way.

This novelette covers the first part of her journey from Ireland into Wales and gives us an idea of who she is and the writing style of the author. Having said that, very little of note actually happens, with the first main section of action happening right at the end of this piece. The formatting of the book is awry in places and there is the odd mistake here and there. Although the text is descriptive, you still don’t get a feel for who the main character is, other than being yet another feisty heroine.

Unlike other stories which have been set in this era, I didn’t feel there was anything to grab me. At only 2 chapters long as well there is little to make me want to read more of her adventures.
