...Light-hearted story but dull romance between two childhood sweethearts....
Harry Boyle is a rich, successful, intelligent geek who has gone back to his home town of Inverarty to try and woo the love of his life, Magenta. She is still the same goth from several years ago who still scares the locals. However, when Harry is trapped in the nearby mines, Magenta is the one who has to rescue Harry without falling prey to the feelings she still has for him. While in the mines, Harry seduces Magenta only for her to find out that they could have been freed the night before, but didn’t due to Harry. And that the whole town now knows about it. She is furious and Harry has to deal with an outcome.
This romance is actually quite dull, because everything works out for them. Harry is Mr. Perfect, intelligent, handsome, well muscled, every girl’s dream, whereas Magenta is loud, bold and independent. She considers herself stupid because she is dyslexic, but this is really resolved quickly at the end when it is uncovered and then everything is fine. Both of the leads have childhood crushes on each other and find out that they still love each other and that neither of them have really changed despite the eight years since they last were in touch. Neither of them really change during the course of the story and all it takes for her to give in to her emotions is for Harry to start pawing his way all over her. Harry is basically a controlling freak going out of his way to ignore Magneta’s wishes or harass her whichever gets him closer to his goals and for her, she pretty much gives in the instant he starts touching her, unable to resist his charms.
However, the story is amusingly written and light hearted with an eclectic set of background characters adding life to the story and in some ways are more interesting than the two leads. The plot bubbles along merrily, not taking itself too seriously and the problems caused by the rest of the cast are far more amusing than the main pair.
It’s a lighthearted story but an ultimately dull romance when you know pretty much what you are going to get.
