The Pan of Hamgee isn’t paranoid. There must be some people in K’Barth who aren’t out to get him. Unfortunately, right now, he’s not sure where they are.

His family are dead, his existence is treason and he does the only thing he can to survive –getaway driving. As if being on the run isn’t bad enough, he finds a magic thimble. He decides to keep it, which can only mean trouble. Sure enough, it does. He unwittingly sets himself on a collision course with Lord Vernon, K’Barth’s despot ruler.

The Pan is forced to make choices and stand up for his beliefs. It’s a challenge, since previously he had no beliefs he was aware of. Faced with a stark moral dilemma, he realises his new found integrity may even stick … if he can stop running.

Q – What kind of reader would like this series?

A – This funny free book is the first book in a humorous science fiction adventure series. It has many ya and teen fiction elements but appeals all ages – the oldest fan is in his 90s and the youngest 10.

If you want a good fantasy series, a good science fiction series or a ya action adventure series give it a try; it has elements of all those. Readers looking for clean teen romance will like the series; not to mention lovers of young adult scifi and fantasy who enjoy a coming of age action novel.

Few Are Chosen is the first novel in a complete humorous science fiction fantasy series of four and it sits firmly within the tradition of British humour or humor and satire fantasy books. It has been compared with Pratchett, Adams, Fforde, Rankin and Holt – to the author’s dismay because that’s a lot to live up to.

Q – What is unique about this humorous science fiction adventure series?

A – It’s an epic genre mash up and there are a lot of 1960s TV and film influences. As an alternate reality K’Barth can be populated by alien species who live side by side with humans, making if a fun read for fans of sci fi adventure with aliens. The story sits in the cross over zone between sci fi and fantasy: set in a unique fantasy world but with modern soft scifi elements like flying cars and static powered mobile phones.

Like any good science fiction series, or good fantasy series – this story is more than simple laugh out loud comedy. It explores deeper themes cloaking them in humour so they can be examined with a light touch. These include growing up and coming of age, romance and relationships, stereotyping, cultural diversity, bullying, the difference between right and wrong or good and evil – especially when it goes beyond sides in a conflict – and standing by your beliefs. When we meet the reluctant hero of this tale he is a bumbling coward, albeit a charming one, and the female lead, who makes her first, brief, appearances in this part is a strong heroine. As they embark on their quest both characters have to grow up and learn fast to survive in a harsh world.

Q – Should this series of books be read in order?

A – Yes. The character development, the coming of age action theme, some of the technology and the clean romance aspects in later books will make the most sense if it is. Although the prequel can be read any time. Here’s the advised reading:

Unlucky Dip: Prequel

Few Are Chosen, K’Barthan Series: Part 1 – free

The Wrong Stuff, K’Barthan Series: Part 2

One Man: No Plan, K’Barthan Series: Part 3

Looking For Trouble, K’Barthan Series: Part 4
