Tamyra Costa flees the complications of big city life and becomes the new girl in mysterious Shiver Cove. She’s a painfully shy girl starting her senior year and is terrified of being left an outsider. Luckily, one of the popular boys has taken notice of her. Too bad his interest also draws a bully’s attention. Unfortunately, dealing with bullies isn’t the worst thing Tamyra will have to face in her new home.

Tamyra has a secret she’s desperate to protect. Her family genetics are of a long line of werewolves and her wolf form is emerging.

Something stalks the streets of Shiver Cove. Could her deepest fears be coming true? Could her werewolf side be killing or has something far more sinister than Tamyra can imagine made Shiver Cove its home?

Tamyra is a young fairly shy teenager struggling at college with cliques and dealing with the fact she is a werewolf. With Tamyra having difficulty getting used to her new state, her mother moves them to join her Aunt in Shiver Cove. The curse is genetic and missed her mother, although her aunt is afflicted. Having moved to Shiver Cove, she makes new friends at the local school while just managing to avoid the local bullies. As she gets to know her new friends, she settles in and starts to come to term with what she is. Then, one of the bullies is found torn apart on the night of a full moon, when Tamyra has no knowledge of what she was doing while as a wolf. This is made all the worse when her group of friends decide to work out exactly what happened.

This is the first book in the Shiver Cove series, with each one focusing on one of the group of friends. As a starter, it introduces the characters well, with most of the detail being given to Tamyra. However it does focus more on her everyday life than as a werewolf with only the after effects of it being shown. The plot is fairly simple, new girl goes to new town where she doesn't know anyone and tries to fit in. It's handled reasonably well, you get a feeling for Tanyra and her friends and it sets up the story for further books, but this also means that very little of consequence really happens in the short time span the book covers. Then again, it is well described and the throughs and feelings of the time spent with them come across clearly enough to understand the trials Tamyra is going through.

The main issue is that while very little about Tamyra being a werewolf is mentioned, it becomes obvious there is not going to be any issue with it in future books beyond perhaps embarrassment of the condition. This is a shame as it means that any tension caused by it is already lost. Also reading between the lines, I would be highly surprised if each of the group didn't have their own dark secret they are hiding away.

Overall, its not a bad book and if you are fond of the genre then this would probably be for you, especially with other books in a series to follow it up and hopefully flesh out the world and the group of friends.
