Cecile Amyotte is currently doing God's work in Botswana running a medical clinic that is helping out the local populace. Long ago, she turned down a marriage proposal from Colin Dumont, who has now gone on to be a doctor running his own clinic. But Colin cannot get the though t of Cecile out of his head and ask God for guidance as to whether he should go to visit her for Christmas. While he lays out what he would require, Cecile is dealing with the government wanting to close the clinic and move all the locals as a large mother-lode of diamonds has been found in the ground below them. Things seem to fall into place for Colin, but when his family is against the idea, he wonders if God does want him to go, while in Botswana Cecile finds she has to deliver a baby. They will need to follow their faith in the hope of a Christmas miracle.
Ah, the joy of a Christian Christmas romance. This is a little odd for a few reasons. So the actual romance is both sweet and clean and, if I have to be honest, non-existent. Both Cecile and Colin are in love and have a past history, but nothing happens between them in the story. They have feelings for each other, even though she turned down his marriage proposal to go to Botswana, but there is nothing to show how in love they are. There is nothing wrong with either protagonist, you get a sense of their purpose, their faith and what they want to do. But the romance is more overshadowed by the faith and guidance that comes from above.
I will be honest, but I thought asking God for three very specific signs always seemed a little dangerous, but it appears to work for Colin. I would hardly say it was in mysterious ways, but it does move the plot on for him. Cecile's story seems to be more in line with what I expected, in that her faith gives her purpose but she still works hard on the path she has chosen. The writing is clear and descriptive in both situations and in general the book is easy to read and makes for a quick coffee time read. The formatting of the book is fine, and the chapters switch neatly from character to character. There are a couple of mistakes, but nothing to really detract from the story.
Overall, it's not really a romance, more a story about two people deciding to reconnect and it could have taken place at any time, although the Christmas spirit certainly adds a little more flavour to it. The start of the story is there, but it ends really before there is any connection between our two leads. This is far more about following God's will and guidance to bring happiness into your life.
If you enjoy the kind of story about faith and love, this will be for you. For everyone else, it's a quick coffee time read.Rating: 3Quicklink to this review
