An inquisitive little fellow wants to know what it was like when his grandmother was young? Were there computers and cellphones, garbage disposals, microwaves, dishwashers, etc.? How did they manage?

As she sat in a chair drinking her tea

when my mother would cook.

I thought of all the kitchen gadgets we had, as I followed her in there.
