The Numbers Don’t Tell The Whole Story

I had the unfortunate experience of losing a family member who died from a heroin overdose in 2006. The signs were there, but many in my family….including me, chose to ignore them and keep their distance because that was ‘their’ problem to deal with. Sadly, it took a drug-related death for many in my family to realize that we could have done a lot more…. a whole lot more!

My story is just one of a number of families who have had to contend with a drug addicted family member or friend. Drug addiction is a serious problem that affects millions of people around the world. Just to give you an idea as to how serious it is, as of 2011, over 20.6 million Americans over the age of 12 years were struggling with some form of drug addiction (that excludes tobacco). That’s not all; drug related emergency room visits in 2011 hit a high of 5 million. Worse still; every single day, an estimated 100 people die of drug overdoses. These statistics paint a grim picture of just how drug addictions can mess up our society.

I didn’t realize the magnitude of the heroin problem that existed in my community until a police officer friend of mine asked me to speak at a local high school. The main intent was to share my life story about overcoming adversity and achieving success, but before I made my presentation he shared with me how many of these teenagers I was going to talk to were susceptible to an epidemic he saw from a law enforcement lens……staggering is all I can say!

After that experience I decided to write about the topic for those like myself, and someone like you or someone you know, that is facing the problem of drug addition with a family member or friend.
