Morgan Hunter is a bachelor who runs a flower shop in Red Deer, Alberta. Over time, his sight begins to change until he finds he has become colour-blind, affecting his business and slowly ruining his life. But this changes when he wins the lottery and becomes $60m dollars richer. Although it cannot save his sight, he can save his shop and start to do good deeds in the area. Then he gets a call from a Parisian Doctor who claims he will be able to save his sight. Taking the chance, Morgan goes through the procedure and when it is over finds he sees the world in a very new way. The procedure shows what he heart is feeling not what his eyes are showing, but it comes with a caveat: after one year his eyesight will return to normal without warning and his eyes will work properly again. Undeterred, he returns to Red Deer with a changed attitude. On his return, he meets a new client Aimee, and they slowly fall in love with each other. But one year later, Aimee is moving out and he decides to propose to her, his eyesight returns and his vision returns to normal leaving him shocked when he next sees Aimee.
This is a sweet romance story, with a very unusual idea to make it work. If you can get past the idea of the surgery then it's a tale with a strong moral contained within it. Then again, with two-life changing events it does seem a little extreme and our protagonist seems to be rather unaffected by all the newfound wealth that he has suddenly accrued. It's interesting to see that he hardly changes throughout the story, despite his fortune, but it does keep a steady viewpoint for the story. The minor characters, from Molly the waitress to Aimee the new client and the woman he comes to love, provide solid interaction for Morgan to play off and provide an extra spark into the story, which Morgan does not really have. Their involvement help move the plot along and keep it flowing instead of being a little stilted. Fortunately, the writing keeps the story running along and neatly switches depending on Morgan's viewpoint. Whether that is with his own sight of his eyes or seeing through his heart about the world around them, how Morgan reacts is shown clearly. Of course, when it comes time for his eyesight to revert to normal, his reaction is unfortunate and it is good to see that there are consequences to what happened.
My only gripe would be the setup being a little unrealistic, but it does provide an interesting story and if you look closely, you can see the influence of several fairy tales underneath it. The spelling in the story is fine and the the same goes for the grammar. The formatting is very neat apart from the start of some paragraphs where the first few words have been capitalised, although not consistently.
Overall, this is a sweet romance with a heart-warming moral and a message for all.
