Alex and Amanda Suarez are a married couple, in their early twenties, living in Havana. They have an intense longing for freedom and a better life for themselves and for their future children. Amanda Suarez is an extremely intelligent high school mathematics teacher. Alex Suarez is an extremely gifted baseball player. Each of them was instilled with the desire for freedom in their youth, by a deceased parent. In Alex’s case, the destination of Greenwich, Connecticut was a specific goal, which became a shared goal for the twosome. Both Amanda and Alex are funny, warm, and faith-filled individuals of strong character, guided every step of the way by their trust in God.
While the couple appears to be outwardly “bien integrado,” showing no disagreement with the government system, this is not truly the case. What starts as a fantasy to escape evolves into an ingenious defection strategy, masterminded by Amanda, supported by each of their respective skill-sets, and furthered with the assistance of a modern day underground railroad-like network of helpers.
Amazingly, Amanda’s plan begins to fall into place beautifully. There is no turning back for them once they get the approval of Amanda’s mother, in a thinly veiled discussion where the word defection is never mentioned, but clearly implied. The couple has already received the blessing of Alex’s father, who uses a coded phrase during a celebratory toast, to signal his approval and encouragement.
Amanda’s plan propels the couple to Tokyo, where Alex is slated to participate in the World Baseball Classic. Joining the team is a colorful contingent of Cuban security operatives, including a security guard who had begun surveillance of the couple back in Havana.
Once in Tokyo, Amanda’s role in planning ends, and the couple’s true total trust in God begins. Clever, funny, and touching, their journey is sure to inspire.
