Every day we are exposed to news from all four corners of the world, much of it quite serious and disturbing. Is it any wonder therefore that our natural inclination is to seek out good news items in the press, be it in the newspapers, TV or via our portable devices?

We all need a daily ‘lift’, however small; something to make us smile, perhaps laugh, and to ease us along our way. Even national news broadcasts seem to acknowledge this fact and often end their news items with an amusing piece or personal story, usually preceded by the words: ‘And finally…..’

In celebration of our desire to share the humour in our everyday lives, we have collected together some of the more amusing stories that have been reported in the press and media over recent and past years.

We have divided the stories into a number of categories and, to help whet your appetite, have listed below a few sample headlines alongside. We do hope you enjoy reading them as much as we have enjoyed compiling them.

* Amusing Tales: The Red Letter Box, The Pirates of Parkham, Cork it!

* April Fools News Stories: The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest, Brunus Edwardii.

* Advertisements: Single Black Female, Dragon Slayer Required.

* Animal Stories: Owl Delivery, Teddy Takes a Vacation.

* Short Tales – Clippings & Snippets: Man’s ‘Left-Brain’ Advice Column.

* Grabbing Headlines: The Life Saver, Chick & Hooker.

* Bungled Crimes: This is a Stikkup, Right Envelope – Wrong Letter.

* Cars Away: Goodbye Lotus, the Toy Yoda Competition.
