Your child is the main character in all sixteen stories in this book! As you read aloud, you personalize the stories by reading your child’s name into the blanks. As your child listens, he/she practices visualization, a skill vital for successful reading comprehension. Some stories include photos and illustrations to help explain concepts.
Stories About Me has three parts. The Fun and Learning section entertains your child with seven stories that demonstrate simple math activities involving measurement, fractions, easy addition, and more. Suggestions for using the 100 chart are included. The author, an experienced elementary school teacher, has combined her love of reading with her desire for young children to gain a solid background for understanding basic mathematics. In the Safety section, your child sees himself/herself learning or choosing safe, responsible behavior in various situations. In the Just for Fun stories, your child visualizes himself/herself riding a zip line, jumping waves at a beach, experimenting with primary colors, and more.
Most stories involve conversation and interaction between you and your child. The terms Mom and/or Dad are used for the parent/guardian, but you should substitute the name your child calls you in place of Mom and/or Dad. If you are a single parent, you may omit the name of the other parent and just use your name. These stories are designed for reading aloud to children ages 5 through 7, but children older and younger may also benefit from listening and participating in the activities.
